Chakra Cleansing Therapy Explained

A popular alternative healing therapy, chakra cleansing is a method of balancing the seven energy centers that run along the human body’s midline.  With roots in ancient Vedic philosophy, the therapy holds that our minds and bodies function properly when our chakras are properly aligned.

Many people are able to sense or feel (if not see) chakras during a cleansing session, which they often describe as manifesting as spinning globes or wheels of color associated with each particular chakra.  There are seven main chakras.  We will examine these, along with their associated colors, locations, and functions.

The Seven Shakras
Root Chakra
Located near the base of the spine, this chakra is often seen as a spinning wheel or vortex in a deep, burnt red.  When this chakra is blocked you may experience complications related to the bones, teeth, spinal column, rectum, prostate gland, etc., as well as self-esteem or self-confidence issues.

A blockage in this area can often be identified by your beginning to intuitively consume naturally red-colored foods like strawberries, tomatoes, etc.  In fact, you’ll notice that any time you experience a blockage in a particular chakra, one way to cleanse it is to eat foods of the color that corresponds to the chakra.  Another approach to rebalancing your chakras is to visualize the globes spinning easily and freely in as many directions as possible.

Sacral Chakra
Located just above the genitals, this chakra is often seen as a spinning wheel or vortex in a bright orange color, so foods like oranges, carrots, and grapefruits are ideal if you’re experiencing a blockage in this area.  When this chakra is blocked you may experience complications related to sexual functions/desires and/or the reproductive organs, kidneys, bladder, pelvic girdle, etc.

Solar-Plexus Chakra
Located six inches above the navel, this chakra is often seen as a glowing wheel or vortex in the color of yellow, so foods like bananas, corn, and lemons are ideal if you’re experiencing a blockage in this area.  When this chakra is blocked you may experience health complications related to your lower back, abdomen, gall bladder, digestive system, liver, spleen, and autonomic nervous system.  Additionally, you may experience emotional complications that manifest as an adverse effect on your willpower and emotional well-being.

Heart Chakra
Located between the breasts, this chakra can be either red, pink or green.  When this chakra is blocked you may experience health complications related to your heart, lower lungs, blood, circulation, skin, and upper back.  Additionally, when this chakra is blocked it means that you are experiencing problems with accepting and giving love in both the metaphorical and literal sense.

Throat Chakra
Located above the collarbone, this chakra usually appears as either a pale silver or light blue vortex.  When this chakra is blocked you may experience health complications related to your ears, jaw, esophagus, trachea, throat, neck, upper lungs, and arms.  Additionally, when this chakra is blocked you might have trouble expressing yourself.

Third-Eye Chakra
Located between the eyebrows, this chakra is usually associated with the purplish hues of violet and/or indigo.  When this chakra is blocked you may experience health complications related to your cerebrum, eyes, ears, nose, sinuses, face, and central nervous system.  Additionally, when this chakra is blocked you might find it difficult to focus or meditate.

Crown Chakra
Located above the crown of the head, this chakra can be seen as either a gold- or violet-colored vortex.  When this chakra is blocked you may experience health complications related to your cerebrum and pineal gland.  Additionally, when this chakra is blocked you might find it difficult to reach enlightenment, spiritual fulfillment, and a higher level of consciousness.

Chakra Cleansing Techniques
You can cleanse your chakras by employing multiple techniques, including color and/or aroma therapy, guided meditation, reiki, yoga, etc.  Choose the method with which you are most comfortable, and don’t hesitate to get guidance and support from an experienced practitioner if you need help in clearing or balancing your chakras.

One method you might try on your own is a visualization technique that can assist you in increasing the amount of energy flowing through your chakras.  Begin by envisioning a golden thread held approximately one 12 inches into the ground between your feet.  Imagine this thread running straight up your body through each chakra point until it comes out of your crown and extends heavenward.  Then visualize a light moving from the ground to the sky that changes colors to match each chakra as it passes through it.  Continue to “run” this energy along the length of the thread in both directions, increasing the speed on each pass until it becomes an unceasing blur.

Some people find that they are better able to feel a restriction or blockage in a physical sense as they begin to work with cleansing their chakras.  Should you experience any pain or pressure in one of your chakras, try visualizing this pesky sensation being expelled as though it were air released from a balloon.
